For more than 50 years, cities around the world have seen increasing numbers of families moving to the suburbs in search of a better life. However, this pursuit of a better lifestyle has had an enormous strain on our physical environment, people have become less involved in the community, less healthy, more stressed, and ultimately less happy. The suburb is now a place of overweight children, indebted families and people separated from their communities, neighborhoods, and the world outside.

Taking Down the Fences aims to address both the social and environmental side of sustainability in the suburbs. By removing the physical barriers (the fences) that separate us from our neighbors, while lessing the environmental impact on the land area of the suburb, it is hoped that the community will allow for neighbors to feel more open to discussion and empowered to take ownership of their environment and work together to address issues of sustainability such as water, waste management, energy, and transportation.

A suburb in Draper, UT has been used as a model for the redesign. Draper, UT is a very dry area in a mountain desert climate. In order to address sustainability, the landscape of the suburb has been redesigned to be as drought tolerant as possible by using many Utah native and drought adapted plant species in gravel mulch that is able to survive on only the local rain and snowfall.
