The following are international campaigns that I have been involved with to encourage global participation in sustainable development.
International Development Week 2010 - Be Yourself, Be Bold, Be the Change, BC Council for International Cooperation
International Development Week (IDW) takes place every year in February. In 2010, IDW took place from February 6 to 13, 2010. As part of IDW 2010, BCCIC profiled eight youth, ages 15-26, from around British Columbia who are acting as global citizens in their communities. The youth were profiled on BCCIC's webpage and each youth had an article, podcast and YouTube video produced which outlined their achievements. In order to spread the campaign, BCCIC utilized a variety of social media tools including Twitter (#IDW2010) and Facebook. Visitors to the webpage increased three-fold, the YouTube videos and podcasts were downloaded widely and BCCIC's followers and fans on the social media websites increased dramatically.

Stop Harming, Start Helping, Oxfam Canada
'Stop Harming, Start Helping' is Oxfam's global campaign surrounding climate change. The campaign focuses on how climate change affects people in developing country, food security and women.
Oxfam International has released on documentary outlining the issues surroundingclimate change entitle, "Sisters on the Planet". As obvious as it sounds, climatechange affects everybody. However, climate change is already having adisproportionate impact on people in developing countries – especially women.Changes in weather including extreme weather events are being felt most indeveloping countries. This is because it is the people in developing countries whorely more on natural resources, are more vulnerable todisaster and have fewer ways to protect themselves. Since women tend to do the jobs that are most affected by changes in weather, they are feeling the greatest pressure

- Pressure developed countries & international institutions to provide further increases in funding and better policies for public services.
- Promote attitudes and beliefs that public services are a right

Iralalaro Region Timor-Leste, Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF)
Timor-Leste suffers from a run-down and inadequate electricity generation and distribution system based on the use of expensive imported diesel fuel and reliant on generators for power 24 hours per day resulting in regular outages. The current limited distribution system has serious problems and there is no countrywide distribution and transmission system.
Studies done over recent decades have indicated hydroelectric power is probably the most feasible indigenous energy source for short-term development and around 15 potential sites have been identified. Of these, the Iralalaro project has been selected as the top priority, because "of its obvious capacity of generating electricity at low cost”. However, this location has also been recommended as the first conservation area in Timor Leste.

The area holds the last remaining Tropical Dry forested area within Timor Leste and is home to a number of critically endangered and threatened species. The proposed project will cause activities that affect existing land use and customary rights for people in the area. Furthermore alternative, micro-hydro, wind and solar projects have not been researched in full and could prove a viable alternative to the potentially damaging hydropower plant.
ACF is working with the local NGO, the Haburas Foundation, to overcome some of these hurdles and to support local initiatives in exploring sustainable development options for the future.
